Christians Supporting
Community Organizing (CSCO) is a bold national attempt to
change the relationship between the theologically
conservative parts of the Protestant church and community
organizing.
from the report by USC's Center for Religion and Civic
Culture (Fall, '99). For entire report see CSCO website in
"About Us."
PURPOSE
The purpose of Christians
Supporting Community Organizing (CSCO) is to work for the
shalom of our society (Jeremiah 29:7) and of our churches by
engaging Evangelical, Holiness and Pentecostal churches in
congregation-based community organizations. To work for the
shalom is to work for systemic/ structural justice within
our communities and churches. By engaging in this work, we
are seeking to bring all of life under the Lordship of
Christ.
MISSION
The mission of CSCO is to
motivate, enable and support churches and pastors of
Evangelical, Holiness and Pentecostal traditions to become
active members of regionally- and nationally-networked
congregation-based community organizations in their city.

CSCO
Advertising Goes Online
Last year we spent $4500 on hard copy ads in six magazines.
The response to us was minimal but we feel the ads presented
CSCO to a large audience of socially active EPH Christians. Go
to 2004ad
to see the ad (in lower left corner of the Adobe Reader click
441% and then click 125%)
This
year with a $4000 ad budget we have increased online
advertising while maintaining a small ad in Sojourners plus
new ads in Social Policy and The Whole Truth (COGIC).
Robert Wood keynoted our Chicago conference and
participated throughout the two days. He
demonstrated the importance for
continuing congregational involvement that organizers
encourage the
role of pastors providing a theological grounding. "SCUPE participated and
invited us to share in their 2006 conference.

Other News
At
last year’s annual meeting we decided to begin to reach
organizers and networks with our CSCO message. One to ones
with organizers have been happening. At the annual meeting
reports will be made of progress.
CSCO members led another all day workshop at the
Gordon-Conwell Center for Urban Ministerial Education (CUME).
This
year there were 70 in attendance to wrestle with the
biblical and
theological grounding, and strategy, of faith-based
community
organization.
